My favorite part of going to school at Heschel is free play and outdoor exploration."
When learning new texts from the Chumash, students are introduced to new words and given Hebrew definitions for them.
Students use actions- tneuot- to help them to remember what each word means.
Some students in the grade three class also create an artistic representation of the words using modelling clay or plasticine.
Here are some of our most recent words, see if you can understand what they mean! (Check the key below)
hamon= many/a lot, avar= pass by
na= please/bevakasha, hishtachava=bow, tzachak= laugh
natan= to give, hamon= many/a lot, mol= to circumcize/brit milah
adon= sir/master, shamar= to guard/to protect
The Butterfly Garden mix has sprouted. Next week, the Grade One class will plant the butterfly garden mix into the colourful tires in the Heschel Garden. Please come and have a look.
Thanks to our incredible co-chairs, volunteers, staff and families, Mitzvah Day 2012 was a meaningful success! Please check out the video here and leave your comments either to this blog post or on the YouTube site.
Todah Rabbah!
Things have been moving quickly as we are entering the last two months of school. The following is what we have planned for the rest of the year.
In Language Arts, we are continuing our Family History unit. The overall learning goal of this unit is for students to learn how historians make use of primary source material – such as documents, photographs and artifacts – to gain a more complete understanding of the lives of individuals and groups. Students will assume the role of historians and will gather source material from their families to study and analyze.
In Math, we are wrapping up our division units. So far we have reviewed our 1-9 times tables by using flash cards, manipulatives, and timed assessments. The students have learned how to use the Even Tens Strategy in order to divide two and three digit numbers by one digit numbers. Moreover, using manipulatives and math stories, the students have been learning how to divide with remainders. Everyone should work on this skill at home, while practicing the basic times tables. Using manipulatives has been very useful for all the students in learning the concept of division with remainders. We will look to have our final division test late next week. We will provide the students with a review.
Our next unit in Math will be Fractions. We will be reviewing the basic definitions of numerator and denominator, while applying the terms to various fraction situations. In this unit, the students will learn how to:
a) use and understand mixed (e.g. 1 3/4) and improper fractions (e.g. 7/4)
b) add and subtract mixed fractions (e.g. 2 1/8 + 2 3/8 = 4 4/8)
c) identify and create equivalent fractions (e.g. 1/2 = 2/4)
d) convert fractions into decimals (e.g. 1/10 = 0.1)
In SES, we are finishing the Prairie provinces and the students are soon ready to write their Prairie postcard. After our trips to British Columbia and the Territories the students will have a final Canada Test. This final unit test will cover things such as the topography, natural resources, culture, industries, and attractions studied. We will provide a review for each student with what they should study.
After our Canada Unit ends, we will move to our Rocks and Minerals unit. In this unit, the students will study the rock cycle, the different types of rocks (e.g. igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary), and how rocks and minerals are used every day.
Yesterday the Grade 3 class was able to hone their observational skills. They worked on focusing on small moments with close attention to detail when recording their observations and they got to learn a lot about veiled chameleons all at the same time!
Thank you so much to David who brought Sebastian to our class. Everyone really enjoyed spending time with a real life chameleon!
Facts we learned about a veiled chameleon:
- they change colour based on their mood
- their fingers and toes are fused together (2 and 3)
- their eyes can move around 180 degrees
- they like to go to the highest possible place
- they can eat every 2 to 3 days
- they need a heat lamp and a mist of water to live comfortably
