Environmental and Outdoor Education Lead


The Toronto Heschel School Seeks a Dynamic Jewish Educator to Lead its Award Winning Environmental and Outdoor Learning Program

This Role:

  • Take the lead role in overseeing the implementation of the school’s environmental and outdoor learning programs.
  • Further develop and enhance the school’s Jewish environmental and outdoor learning programs and learning garden curriculum.
  • Oversee and maintain the Heschel Garden and Garden Guardians program.
  • Train faculty in implementing outdoor and environmental education.
  • Act as co-advisor, student council environment committee
  • Oversee Eco-school’s annual accreditation process.
  • Coordinate annual Tu Bisvhat environmental symposium, earth day, mitzvah day gardening, and other environment education special events at the school.
  • Research and apply grants to further support the environment education and stewardship programs of the school.

The Environment and Outdoor Education Lead is a part-time position (40%-50% FTE).  This position may be combined with other teaching, training, and/or program development positions to create a full-time role for interested and qualified candidates.


You are:

  • Passionate about advancing environmental and outdoor education through a Jewish lens.
  • A hands-on, hands-in-the-soil educator who is not afraid of worms.
  • A creative and flexible thinker who can meet deadlines, work with specific criteria, and collaborate on innovative projects within clearly defined parameters.
  • An experienced educator with proven ability to develop user-ready learning programs and materials through the whole development cycle: conceptualization, development of teacher guides and student materials, training and guiding faculty in use of materials; iterative revision of materials based on evaluation of their efficacy.
  • Familiar with progressive learning methods including, interdisciplinary learning, learning through the Arts, inductive / discovery-based learning, Big Ideas learning, project-based learning.
