Rooted in Nature:
Jewish Environmental Learning

At The Toronto Heschel School, environmental education is more than a subject—it’s a sacred responsibility. We integrate ecological awareness with Jewish learning, so students develop both a scientific understanding and a spiritual connection to the natural world.

EcoSchool Leadership

EcoSchool Leadership

We are proud to lead by example as:

  • The first Jewish day school in Ontario to achieve Platinum EcoSchool certification
  • A community that sees environmental stewardship as a core Jewish value and mitzvah
Learning That Grows

Learning That Grows

From Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8, our students explore the environment through hands-on, age-appropriate experiences that deepen over time:

  • JK–Grade 3: Conducting waste audits, composting, and caring for our school grounds
  • Grade 4: Partnering with the Toronto Zoo to raise and release salmon—supporting local ecosystems
  • Grade 7: Studying Talmudic texts about nature, planting saplings, and writing legacy reflections such as:
“What we found in the world.”
“What we will leave in the world.”
The Heschel Garden

The Heschel Garden

Our garden is not just a space—it’s a living classroom:

  • A hands-on lab for interdisciplinary learning across science, ethics, and Judaics
  • A source of nourishment—intellectually, spiritually, and physically
  • A place that cultivates awe, wonder, and a deep appreciation for creation
